Vauxhall Corsa is the number one choice for UK motorists

A recent survey which analysed the insurance quote details from a leading price comparison website over the course of the last year found that the Vauxhall Corsa was the most searched for vehicle.

Next in line in the popularity stakes was the Ford Fiesta, followed by the Volkswagen Golf, and the Renault Clio. The trend for smaller and more economical cars as opposed to gas guzzling 4 x 4 vehicles is a direct reaction to the rising costs of fuel and also insurance premiums motoring experts believe.

The survey also found that the most searched for engine size was a 1.6 which shows yet again that Brits are turning their backs on high powered cars in order to help keep the cost of motoring as low as possible.

Insurance premiums have been rising year on year in the UK with motorists seeing on average a rise of 33% in the cost of their insurance cover this year as compared to the last. Factors such as engine size and the make and model of a vehicle all have an impact on the cost of insurance, which is why so many drivers are now opting for less powerful and more economical cars.

Young female drivers more likely to break the speed limit?

Young women more likley to text behind the wheel a survey has revealed

A number of insurance companies are considering restructuring their pricing system for young female drivers after a survey has revealed that women drivers are more likely to break the speed limit, and use a mobile phone behind the wheel, compared to male drivers.

The results of the study shatters the long held perception that young male drivers are the worst culprits when it comes to speeding and other dangerous driving acts. Traditionally young female drivers enjoyed lowers rates of insurance when compared to their male counterparts as they were considered a lower risk group, however that could all be about to change following the publication of these survey results.

The survey results revealed that 48% of teenage girls are likely to drive 10mph over the speed limit but only 36% of men admitted to speeding. 16% of the teenage girls questioned said they would consider themselves to be aggressive drivers, which is up 9% on the results collected in 2005.

Another worrying statistic which the survey threw up was the increasing number of drivers who are using their mobile phone while driving. Over half of the young women questioned through the online survey said they are likely to text or talk on their mobile while driving compared to just 38% of the young men.

New drivers buying their first car at younger age

A study conducted by the AA Car Insurance company found that new drivers are buying their first car at a younger age than ever before, despite the rising cost of insurance for these motorists.

More teenagers than ever are purchasing their own vehicle as soon as they pass their test with one in three women owning their own car by the age of 20, whereas the figure is higher for men as half will own a vehicle by this age.

However with the first year accident rates still standing incredibly high, one in five of these drivers likely to be involved in a serious accident within their first year on the road, these motorists experience the very highest insurance rates as they are considered to be a high risk group.

Young male drivers are statistically more at risk than young female drivers, which is why they experience higher insurance prices. It has been estimated that a male motorist who has recently passed his test is twice as likely to be seriously injured, or even killed, as a result of a road traffic accident when compared to a female driver of the same age.

Although there is some light at the end of the tunnel for young drivers experiencing high insurance costs. No claims-bonuses can be built up quickly, as long as the policymaker doesn’t make a claim or convicted of a driving offence, meaning their insurance premiums will fall dramatically over the coming years helping them to save money on the cost of motoring.
