Home insurance premiums increase by 46% in certain areas of UK

A recent survey has found that home insurance premiums have risen by almost 50% in certain areas of the UK with the increase in fraud and the recent spate of bad weather being blamed for the sharp rise in premiums.

Where you live has a huge bearing on how big of an increase you’ll see in the cost of your annual home insurance. In Glasgow home owners have seen an increase of 36% from £111 last year, to £151 this year, while Dorking in Surrey saw a rise of 46%.

Greater London boroughs have been worst hit out of the whole of the UK, although the town of Dorking has seen the very biggest jump in the cost of their cover with home insurance up by a massive 46% compared to last year. In 2010 the average annual cost of a home insurance policy in Dorking was £119, compared to £174 in 2011.

The insurance industry say the increases have come about as a result of the large number of claims they received for repair work following the extreme cold snap which hit Britain this winter, and also because of the increased level of fraud.

On average the cost of home insurance has risen by 6% for UK homeowners, and according to industry experts, premiums are likely to continue rising year on year.

Home security warning ahead of the festive period

Home owners are warned to take extra care when it comes to their home security in the run up to, and during, the festive period as this is a notoriously popular time for thieves to strike.

With each person in the UK thought to spend between £250 and £650 on average on Christmas gifts, there’s plenty of tempting items left under the tree during this time which will attract potential burglars. Recent figures have revealed that some 70,000 homes are likely to be targeted during the Christmas holiday.

According to home insurance claims taken from the last 10 years from Aviva, New Year’s Eve is the date when homes are most likely to be burgled with properties being 22% more likely to be broken into on this date than on any other day of the year.

Burglars take advantage of empty houses as people visit friends and family during this time, and also the fact that people are more likely to enjoy a drink during the festive period, and therefore may take a more lacks approach to home security.

Three quarters of us admit to being more aware of the risk of a break in during this time of the year, but only 1 in 4 of us takes extra measures to secure our homes during the festive period.

It’s advisable to check the level of your contents insurance during this time to ensure it covers the cost of new items you may have bought or received as Christmas presents.

Home insurance to protect your property as the cold weather bites

As the forecasts warn of increasingly cold weather and the risk of snow and ice, now is the time to check your home insurance is up to date as the winter weather can cause havoc for property owners.

During the cold weather which hit Britain in January 2010, insurance claims for burst water pipes increased by a massive 220% in just four weeks. Burst pipes as a result of plummeting temperatures were found to be the most common claim for home insurers during the winter months last year.

In some cases, the cost of repairing damage to a home following a burst water pipe can run into hundreds of thousands of pounds, with damage being caused to ceilings, furniture, appliances and also personal belongings.

If you’re not planning to be at home for a few days during the winter, it’s a good idea to ask a friend or family member to take a look around your property to check everything is in order. It’s also advisable to check all exposed pipes outside are insulated to try and minimise the risk of it becoming damaged and bursting during freezing temperatures.

Home insurance experts advise policyholders to check their insurance covers them for long spells away from home if they are planning an extended trip over the Christmas or winter period.

Top UK car insurer to move into home insurance

Top UK car insurer Admiral has announced its plans to move into providing home insurance cover from next year.

Admiral is currently responsible for insuring 6% of the cars on UK roads and also owns the price comparison website confused.com and elephant.co.uk. The insurance company now hopes to expand its product base by moving into home insurance.

As an established name in the insurance industry, making the transition into home cover shouldn’t be too difficult for Admiral as they will avoid having to fork out for expensive advertising and marketing campaigns by adding their home cover policies to their existing price comparison website.

Diversifying into new areas will be key to Admiral’s continued growth in the insurance industry and getting a foothold in the home insurance business will enable the company to expand further.

One expert insurance analyst is confident Admiral can make a success of its move into household cover if the company can identify, and target, a number of key areas of home insurance which are currently overpriced.

The news was first reported in an article in industry publication, Post Magazine. A spokesperson for Admiral has since confirmed the news. The insurance company could start underwriting home insurance from as early as the end of this year, although 2011 is a more likely date.
